As you may all know that public relations practitioners (PRPs) use social media as source of communication with the public or society, but they do not have any control or whatsoever on how the messages they share are reciprocated. This means that the public has the power to say anything about the public relations practitioners more especially criticize the brands they are representing and in return this might be one of the disadvantages of the use of social media by PPRs.
(click link on how to avoid cancel culture)Cancel culture is a trendy topic especially on twitter, now when it happens that it is ranking as the highest trend, the brands and PRPs are unable to reach a good number of people with their messages as twitter will be flooding with the #cancel culture. Sometimes the PRPs share messages that relate to the trend but are sensitive to social media users and users eventually will come for them and ambush the brand.
On the other hand, cancel culture can be perceived as the modern approach for the public voice to be heard and justice to be prevailed. Public relations practitioners can use this space to hear out the public's concerns about the brands they represent, it can also be way of finding an effective solution when working on a brand’s campaign. Cancel culture does address issues of immorality and accountability of brands therefore it gives a chance to these brands to look themselves in the mirror and rectify their mistakes or intentional misconducts. At the end of the day, the world is suggesting that cancel culture must be cancelled.
Thank you so much mr Mashiane. The content is so Well structured, starting with the explaination of what cancel culture is. As a fellow PR student, i found this helpful and interesting. True, PRPs are very sensitive to social media because they are exposed to many forms of criticism from anyone but they can still find something positive in all that: hearing the public concern. Thank you for the thought.
